On Sunday, May 24 I celebrated my 23 birthday. Originally I hadn’t planned on doing anything other than sitting in my bed and re-watching One Tree Hill for the 28th time. Kaalen had other plans. He was supposed to go into work until 4 p.m. but luckily got off early so that we could make our way into Pittsburgh.
First stop: Location Surprise
Days leading up to my birthday I had been hinting about going to the zoo since our last visit was an epic fail. It was an overcast day and not too hot. What we saw as the perfect day for the zoo the animals did not agree. Most animals were sleeping, hiding or removed for construction of the exhibit. I was so disappointed but was hopeful that my next visit would be more enjoyable.
Sunday was a hot day. Not a lot of clouds and a bit muggy, not enjoyable zoo weather. Kaalen knew I really wanted to see animals so instead he found the National Aviary near North Shore Pittsburgh. It was something we had never done before and was ideal because it was an indoor exhibit. We saw hundreds of beautiful birds and although it was a little scary it was an amazing experience. And not to mention we got to see penguins. Who doesn’t love penguins!
After the aviary exhibit we made a quick stop by the strip district to a quaint Wine Bar called The Winery. It was about 4:30 p.m. and the bar closes at 5 p.m. Kaalen was really eager for us to try new things and wine tasting sat at the top of that list. As we walked in we were handed the wine tasting lineup for the day and it consisted of two white wines and four red wines. For a small fee we dove right in. We started with the white wines. Being new to wine tasting we were unsure of proper etiquette but I had seen the group next to us smelling and swirling the wine in their glass. I did the same and was actually surprised by the delicious aroma. As I was casually sipping my wine I peeked over to Kaalen’s glass to see that it was completely empty. It had been about a minute… I quickly gulped mine too and we were off tasting the next wine. As we got to the red wines the taste started to get very “pepper” like. I wasn’t a fan. At this time the bartender also began to grate cheese to pair our wines with. I can’t speak for Kaalen but let me tell you, I was more interested in the cheese than the red wine. It was amazing! On our last glass of wine we explored the winery and discovered it was actually a really awesome spot. Before we left we purchased our favorite wine and it was then that we realized we don’t know how to casually drink. We were in and out in 15 minutes.
At this point we were starving and it was vital we got to food before one of us got grumpy (…Kaalen). I suggested one of my all-time favorites, Bar Louie. It’s right on the water and serves great food and drinks. And of course we ordered more drinks. I mean it is my birthday! In love with the environment Kaalen and I fantasized about living in a downtown area within walking distance to bars and restaurants.
Last stop: Rivers Casino
What better way to end the night than to end it with winning money! I was feeling lucky and I had to go before returning back to Morgantown. Kaalen was a little hesitant to go but after handing him some money to bet with he was all in! (Get it!)
I pleasantly had one of the best birthdays because of how special Kaalen is. I can’t thank him enough for always making me feel so special not just on my birthday but every day!
Until next time,
